About the Kamuela Vacuum Cooling Cooperative

Formed in 1964, the Kamuela Vacuum Cooling Cooperative was implemented to assist local farmers in the rapid cooling, cold storage, and distribution of agricultural products.

The facility supports the post-harvest operations for a group of agricultural producers. The Kamuela Vacuum Cooling Plant stretches across 195,000 square feet of state land in Kamuela, Hawaii. KVCC has a long term lease with the state for land and facilities.

The facilities contains two vacuum cooling chambers, two walk in refrigerators, a plug in site for refrigerated trailers and a loading dock for three refrigerated containers. The containers are loaded during the work day then delivered to the Port of Kawaihae for inter-island shipping. KVCC stores and distributes local grown product to markets across the state.

Some of the vegetables grown by members include lettuce, beets, broccoli, head cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, kale, chard, carrots and radish varieties.

The facility offers critical infrustructure for cold storage for extending shelf life of fresh produce. The members share the use of facilities and use costs. If you are a producer in the Kohala District of Hawaii Island who needs rapid cooling and/or refrigeration service, check out join the co-op and fill out a membership application.
